Background of the Study
In the modern digital age, awareness of technological innovations is crucial for students’ academic and professional development. In Kwali Local Government Area, Federal Capital Territory, informal education plays a significant role in bridging the digital divide and enhancing students' understanding of emerging technologies. Informal educational platforms such as community tech workshops, online forums, and peer-to-peer learning groups provide a dynamic environment where students are exposed to the latest technological advancements outside the conventional classroom setting (Okeke, 2023). These settings allow learners to explore and experiment with new technologies, thereby fostering innovation and critical thinking. The interactive and flexible nature of informal education enables students to gain hands-on experience with digital tools and applications, which are often not covered in depth in formal curricula (Chukwu, 2024). In Kwali, local initiatives promote digital literacy among youth through community-driven tech hubs that offer training in coding, robotics, and other innovations. This approach not only improves technical competencies but also stimulates creativity and problem-solving skills. Informal education further facilitates mentorship opportunities where experienced practitioners guide students in applying technology to real-world challenges, thereby reinforcing theoretical knowledge acquired in schools (Eze, 2025). Additionally, the integration of digital media and online resources provides access to a global pool of information, ensuring that students remain up-to-date with rapid technological changes. Collaborative learning in these environments encourages idea-sharing and continuous improvement, fostering a culture of innovation. The study aims to explore the effect of informal education on raising students' awareness of technological innovations, evaluating how community-based tech programs complement formal education. By examining the relationship between informal learning and technological literacy, this research seeks to provide insights into how these practices contribute to developing tech-savvy individuals prepared for the challenges of a rapidly evolving digital landscape (Nwosu, 2023).

Furthermore, the rapid pace of technological change necessitates adaptive learning strategies that formal education systems may struggle to incorporate. Informal education offers a nimble alternative, where curricula can be updated in real time to reflect the latest innovations, thereby enhancing students' overall digital competence.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing importance of technological literacy in the digital era, many students in Kwali Local Government Area remain inadequately informed about recent technological innovations. Traditional educational institutions often struggle to integrate rapidly evolving technology into their curricula, resulting in a knowledge gap among students (Ibrahim, 2023). This gap is compounded by limited access to modern resources and expert training within formal education settings. In contrast, informal education initiatives—such as community tech hubs and online learning communities—offer alternative pathways for acquiring digital skills. However, empirical research on the effectiveness of these informal platforms in enhancing students' awareness of technological advancements is sparse. Variability in program quality, accessibility issues, and inconsistencies in implementation further complicate the evaluation of their impact. This study seeks to address these issues by investigating the effect of informal education on students' technological awareness in Kwali. It will identify the strengths and limitations of current informal educational initiatives, explore the challenges students face in accessing updated technological information, and assess how community-driven tech programs bridge the digital divide. The research intends to provide insights that can inform policy decisions and educational strategies aimed at ensuring students are better equipped to navigate the digital landscape. Addressing these challenges is essential for fostering a generation that is both technologically proficient and innovative (Ajayi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of informal education on enhancing students' awareness of technological innovations in Kwali Local Government Area.

  • To identify the informal educational practices that most effectively contribute to technological literacy among students.

  • To propose recommendations for integrating informal tech education initiatives with formal curricula to improve overall digital competence.

Research Questions:

  • How does informal education influence students' awareness of technological innovations in Kwali?

  • Which informal educational practices are most effective in promoting technological literacy?

  • How can successful informal tech education initiatives be integrated into the formal educational system?

Research Hypotheses:

  • Students engaged in informal tech education programs demonstrate higher awareness of technological innovations compared to those who are not.

  • There is a positive correlation between the frequency of participation in informal tech-related activities and the level of technological literacy among students.

  • Integrating informal tech education practices into formal curricula will significantly enhance students’ digital competencies.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the critical role of informal education in promoting technological awareness among students. The findings will provide valuable insights for educators and policymakers seeking to bridge the digital divide and enhance digital literacy. By highlighting effective informal educational practices, the research contributes to the development of integrated educational models that combine formal and informal learning, preparing students to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving digital landscape. Ultimately, the study aims to foster a generation of tech-savvy individuals equipped with the necessary skills for future innovation and economic growth.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to examining the effect of informal education on students' awareness of technological innovations in Kwali Local Government Area, Federal Capital Territory. It focuses solely on informal educational practices related to technology and does not account for other factors influencing digital literacy. Data collection is confined to selected schools and community tech programs, and the findings may not be generalizable beyond the study area.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Informal Education: Learning that occurs outside the formal school system, often through community-based or online platforms.

  • Technological Innovations: New and improved technological tools, systems, and processes that drive progress in various sectors.

  • Digital Literacy: The ability to effectively use digital tools and resources to access, evaluate, and create information.
